Road Race No.10 Results

Thursday evening saw the finish of our road race series, with the tenth edition being contested in fine form by everyone. Its hard to believe the season is nearly over with having only the championship races left to contest. By no means was it going to be an easy route as it was all climbs from Shalee cross on to Silvermines, Dolla and the finish at Ormond stile just before the descent into Templederry. Nothing like finishing the road race series with a good challenging hill climb 😉

Though there were a lot of members away on their summer holidays, we still had 12 members turn out on the evening which was great to see and thank god the weather for the first time in a couple of weeks was kind to us. We were able to make up 3 equal sized handicapped groups on the evening. Group 1 consisting of John Foote, Eva Moynan, Stuart Witts & Peter Moynan, group 2, Owen Hynes, Nanno Vuyk, John O’Carroll & Joey Donnelly and finally in Group 3 we had Dan Hogan, Liam Callaghan, Eoin Woods & Pat Bergin.

Group one were set off with a 6 minute lead on group two and finally the third group were set off a further 3 mins 45 seconds behind the second group. There were strong groups all around tonight for the race with everyone giving it their all and working brilliantly together with a tough head wind to deal with after the turn at the Five Alley roundabout not making things easy at all!

Pain and grimaces were clear to be seen on the faces of the leaders coming up to the finish line with the final gruelling kick up of gradient before the finish line of about 8%, gosh I can only imagine that they were delighted it was nearly over! Dan Hogan, who it was great to see back out racing with us again, proved our victor on the evening putting in a very strong performance with Pat Bergin in second position and Liam Callaghan claiming the last position on the podium. Lads, a huge well done to you and to all who raced! You all have made such a great effort this year to race with the club and it’s great to see. Thanks go out Selina who did the timekeeping on the night and also to our road marshals, Mike and Conor keeping everyone safe on the road as usual, your help is very much appreciated.

We had a very special treat after the race from two very loyal supporters, Rebecca and Caoimhe Callaghan who baked the most fabulous cookies especially for all of those racing and helping out. They went down an absolute treat indeed and we even went back for seconds, so thanks a million to ye both for the cookies, yum 🙂  Will we see ye again the same time next week ladies, yes? 🙂 We could get used to this!!
