Road race 4 results
On Thursday evening the 15th of May we had our 4th race in our road race series. We had 15 members out on the night to tackle the 30km course which started at the top of the Cloughjordan road, on to Cloughjordan, left for Modreeny and left onto the Old Birr Road with the finish line at Sloe Lane (Rathnaleen). Group 1 consisted of: Duncan Hodgins, Eva Moynan, Peter Moynan, John Spillane and Stuart Witts. Group 2: Kevin Byrne, Mikey Connors, Joey Donnelly, Owen Hynes, John O’Carroll & Nanno Vuyk. Group 3: Patrick Bergin, Liam Callaghan, David Kyle & Eoin Woods. It was another very blustery evening on the bikes but the rain did stay away so no complaints! Group one had a 5 minute head start on group two and group 3 followed a further 2.5 minutes back. It was tough going from the start as it was into a stiff breeze the whole way out to Cloughjordan but all groups were working very well together. Nanno was feeling strong on the night and decided to try and make a break stick before the scratch group caught up but it was early and he couldn’t get any of the rest in the second group to go with him to help and then, as he was out on his own, was very unlucky to just miss the turn onto the Old Birr road which effectively finished his chances of staying with the scratch group as they flew past him as he was turning around. The scratch group then caught up with the remaining lads in group 2 just after turning onto the Old Birr road and 3 of the lads(Owen, Nanno & John O’C) managed to jump on for a while but Kevin’s saddle unfortunately moved on him making it tough to get the power down and some surges from the scratch group burned off all bar Owen who managed to hang on to the back of the group. John Spillane and Duncan were the last two out front to be caught and John managed to jump on when the group passed. There was a bit of “cat and mouse” being played coming to the line so John said he’d force the lads hand and came around them all and made a great drive for the line. Fair play to John but then the lads went into overdrive and set a serious pace in a group sprint for the line! Liam went on to pip Pat to the line and take the win on the evening so very well done to you Liam!! There was very little in it between the group of lads crossing the line but Owen managed to get across for the final step of the podium on the night. Very well done to everyone who came out and made the race a great success on the evening!! We would like to thank Jan for timekeeping, Vic for taking the photographs and Conor for marshalling.
