CLUB UPDATES
Club racing
The second road race of the year and of the Spring Series took place last Thursday night (18 th
April) with the 30km race route starting at the usual spot in Upper Clashnevin and heading towards
Toomevara and Moneygall, rounding the Obama Plaza Roundabout and returning back in the
direction of Nenagh before finishing just after the entrance to the Lisboney Graveyard. It was a
super evening for racing as conditions were perfect, and again we had a good turnout of
participants. Unfortunately our pool of Group 1 racers is limited and some were not able to make it.
Edvins took the honours on the night here. Group 2 ended up a keenly contested battle, but the
seven participants initially played a bit of cat and mouse on the outward leg to Moneygall and it
looked like they were enjoying the evening sunshine a bit too much. In fact one participant was
heard to say that he was enjoying brushing up on his tan for Mallorca, the pace was so relaxed!
But more about him later…
While the tempo picked up a bit on the way back, most were happy to keep their powder dry for
the now inevitable sprint finish. Group 2 and Group 3 merged on the long drag after Toomevara,
and the bunch of 12 riders successfully negotiated the two roundabouts either side of the
motorway flyover. Rob tested the waters at this point, pulling up alongside Eoin O’Connor who
was going strong and the head of the bunch. The pace quickened as the race neared the finish
line, but it was to be on the drag up the hill past Lisboney graveyard where inevitably it was
decided. Eoin Ryan was first to go for it, on the inside he put in a big sprint using all his
considerable power and he was followed by Andy English who caught and passed him with only
150 metres to go. Things were looking good for last week’s winner at this point, but he started to
fade and suddenly up popped Nanno Vuyk who passed him on the outside going like a train!
Nanno was followed by Rob who was putting out big power as well at this point but couldn’t catch
the flying Dutchman who showed all his experience and a great sprint to take the spoils in an
exciting finish. Cathal Hanrahan dug deep to take Group 3 and finished 6th in the bunch sprint – an
excellent result for a man who is coming back to form after missing a lot of last year.
Well done all. Detailed results of all racing including the points awarded will be made available
online in the coming days. A big thank you to Jan who officiated on the night, and to Selina who
took some great pictures which have been uploaded to the Facebook page here. Thanks to Owen for
marshalling at the Obama Plaza roundabout, and to Noel and Conor for helping out as well.
