Club Notes Weekend Sunday August 3rd
Last Thursday’s 32 km road race which ended atop of Ormond Stile brought a fine finale to club league racing. From a group of 14 who started from Ballywilliam Creamery in three handicapped race categories, it would be Mikey Connors who would whittle down the lead group of 9 (category 2) riders to take the win followed by David Kyle and Pat Bergin in second and third respectively. Handicapped times were calculated to perfection on the night resulting in an exciting and hotly contested race. The remaining two ‘scratch group’ riders – Liam Callaghan and Pat Bergin who had started with a 2mins 45second time deficit on the category 2 riders, had reduced this deficit to just one minute at Dolla despite having first lost a further five seconds within the first 5km to the Five Alley roundabout. From Dolla, Liam and Pat continued to reduce the gaps on the uphill approach toward the finish passing all but two riders at Ormond Stile. By that stage, it was too late as Mikey crossed the line first reflecting his strong performance throughout the year. Well done Mikey. David recovered well from a slipped chain in the final kilometer and despite loosing valuable seconds, hung on to secure second spot just ahead of the chasing Liam and Pat.
