Club Notes Weekend of 12th May 2014
North Tipperary Wheelers Club Notes Weekend of Sunday 11th May 2014
With the annual Club Tour of Lough Derg taking place on Sunday May 25th, the focus of the Wheelers this week was placed on base training to enhance fitness and endurance. The Club Tour is an established feature of the club calendar with all members encouraged to take part including those from the leisure, faster and racing groups. This is a fantastic and sociable 130km cycle that is also open to non club members who get the experience of a highly organised cycle around Lough Derg. This year’s event will depart and finish again from the Lakeside Hotel, Ballina with sign-on available from 8.30am with first group depareting at 9.30am. There will be a choice of two speeds to cater for all abilities with a scheduled food stop in Portumna. Refreshments will be available at the finish. This is a great opportunity to get involved with the club for the first time or simply to take on the challenge of the Lough Derg cycle. Full details are available on the club website (under the calendar section).
On Saturday morning last, 9 riders took on the tried-and-tested Visit Nenagh Classic A4 category race route with an additional climb of Coume and return via Portroe before finishing in Nenagh, a total of 102km. On Sunday, a similar distance was cycled by the faster group taking in Portroe-Ballina-Toomgraney-Broadford-Obrian’s Bridge-Birdhill-Nenagh whilst 4 leisure group members took on an alternative route.
Last Thursday’s club race was the second in the Time Trial series – a 16km race against the clock which was won by Liam Callaghan in a time of 22.35 despite the tough weather conditions. Full results and league table standing are available on the club website. This Thursday’s club race will be a 25km road race starting on the old N7 at Birdhill and finishing at the Fivealley turnoff. Sign on at 6.15pm at Moynan’s Bike Shop, Nenagh with a depart for the start line at 6.30pm sharp. Sign-on will also be available at the start line. Details of the race route are available on the club website.
Training continues this week at the usual times – Tuesday night training ride leaving Moynan’s bike shop in Nenagh at 6pm, Saturday from Woodies carpark, Streame at 9am and Sunday from Moynans at 9am.
