Happy faces of Pat, Kevin and Eoin on Saturdays Race training spin

Happy faces of Pat, Kevin and Eoin on Saturdays Race training spin

What’s better – Quality or Quantity? Often the topic of conversation in early winter cycling riders and a discussion that provided much amusement and discussion for the riders on last Saturdays 105km race train spin.   The overriding evidence dictates that the answer is of course ‘quality’ and so, this 105km was played out in ‘quality’ fashion adhering to the tried and tested scientific principles of training zones. But who’s training zones?  Whilst we expanded our vocabulary, we searched around for those with heart monitors comparing various statistics, figures and pedal strokes with interest.  Before long we had covered much road from Nenagh, Borrisokane, Birr, Roscrea.  On the homeward straight from Toomevara to Nenagh, it was decided (or rather the science dictated) that short interval sprints would round-off what was otherwise a well-executed training ride adhering to the correct training zone that will no doubt pay dividends come pre-season race training in December.   Uphill efforts can be conducted during interim training sessions during the week whilst this spin was about consistency through ‘quality’ mileage.   The body doesn’t lie and true to its objective, the body was tired but not spent after this ride leaving opportunity for the additional mileage on Sundays Club Spin.

Perfect though foggy conditions extended through to Sunday with 20 riders leaving Moynans Bike Shop and a further 2 joining on the Road. The groups stayed together  until Coolbawn and then split with 16 in the Senior group and which whittled down further to 10 with riders being picked up by the pursuing groups on the same 70k  route. The senior group finished with some panache and a group finish on return to Nenagh.  Great to see so members out in such numbers and we look forward to a repeat next week.

A final reminder that the Club AGM takes place this evening at 8pm at the Dapp Inn Nenagh and all members are expected to attend.

‘Quality’ Club training spins continue for the following week.  Saturday morning rides for the race training (9am from Stereame Car Park) and Sunday morning for leisure, intermediate and senior groups (9am from Moynans bike shop).  All levels are catered for on Sunday morning so feel free to come along if you are new to cycling.
