Club Notes / This weeks spins
Hi folks we hope ye have all had a good week, with some nice fine weather and the longer evenings making an appearance over the last week hope ye have all been able to get out on the bikes.
Wednesday
On last Wednesday evening we had the first night of our ”Bike for life course” we had 13 people turn up on the night eager to learn from our recently qualified coaches, the coaches showed the group some bike skills and have heard that Noel was very good on the night with his talk on the skills also on the night Gerry gave a good talk on club gear and also had some club gear on display for the group to see, there was also a variety of different bikes on display on the night too.
Thursday
Club race season is back with a bang, On last Thursday we had the first of our road races and we had a really good turn out of club members to take part and the weather was kind enough to us on the night also. The route was Five Alley- Birdhill- Up the Ramp- Back to the Five Alley, Well done to Eva Moynan who took the win on the night and Selina Hynes on taking second place and to Joey Donnelly who completed the podium. Well done to everybody who raced on the night kudos to ye all. Thanks to Jan for the timekeeping, Conor and Maree for the marshalling, thanks to Mike Molamphy for taking the photos of the racing on the night.
Sunday
On Sunday we had a few club members head to Rathdowney to take part in Ras an Laois, Owen Hynes and Micheal Crowe competed in the A4 and we had Nanno Vuyk in the M50 class which were ran separately. Below is a report from Owen on his an Micheal’s A4 race.
It was reasonably uneventful with myself and Michael keeping ourselves up near the front all the way around until one poor soul touched wheels (I think) about 10km from the finish and went out over the bars fairly spectacularly with his bike thrown forward bouncing down the road. I didn’t hear how he was after but I hope he’s ok after a hard fall like that. He was straight in front of me at the time and I had absolutely nowhere to go! I have no idea how I stayed up but a complete reflex action took over and I was able to bunny hop over his leg and stay upright! A sprint followed to catch back up to the front but it never looked like anyone was getting away today as the bunch was always quickly shutting anyone down that tried and ended up in the inevitable group gallop to the line. Both Michael and myself finished well in the group but just outside the points so no prizes came back to NTW from the A4 race. A really well run and marshalled event and big thanks go to the organisers we’ll definitely be back again!

Sunday: Leaving at 9am from carpark at Moynans.
Depending on numbers present, we’re going to split into three groups with defined speeds.
The 3 groups are;
- Firstly a “Green” group that will be for beginners/leisure and that group will be in the region of 20-24kph.
- The next group will be the “Orange” group which is an intermediate group and will be controlled at 25-27kph average.
- Finally we’ll have a “Red” group which will do in the region of 28-32kph average.
We’ll split into the different groups in the carpark, with Red leaving first, then Orange and finally Green. The orange and red groups will cover the same route but there is also a green group spin that should only take about 2 hours cycling and includes a coffee stop.
For anyone reading this and sitting on the fence about whether to come out and give it a go, come on out and try it. You’ll be well looked after, just come in and be ready to leave on your bike at 9am from Moynans.
This week’s Green route is a challenge: Moynans – Portroe – Ballina – Birdhill – Up ramp to Applegreen for Coffee – Back to Nenagh, 53km. If ye feel this is too much for those out then by all means stick to the old route of out and back via the old N7 to cut it back by around 10km and make it a lot easier!
And for the Orange & Red it’s Moynans – Portroe – Right over bridge in Ballina – Left after bridge in Killaloe – Turn right at O’Briensbridge – left just before Broadford – Follow R465 turning left just before Barry’s shop – O’Briensbridge – Birdhill – Back to Nenagh, 92km.
We hope you have a great week everyone and hopefully we’ll see you out and about on the bikes during the week and weekend…
