Club Notes / This weeks spins
Good evening to you all. My god that was one busy week!!
Tuesday evening we had our two TT teams out fine tuning their strategy for the Visit Nenagh Team Time Trial which was taking place on the following Saturday and they were blessed with a fabulous sunny evening. The two teams rolled out to Birdhill together as one group and then split into their separate groups for the return leg. They then did a very steady spin back to the fivealley fine tuning their technique.
Meanwhile Eoin woods was in action at the ever popular Limerick League race. Well done all.
Thursday evening we had a great turnout for our first club road race of the season. The weather was perfect and there were two groups to start and despite a bad car accident at the Applegreen station near Birdhill forcing the race route to be changed mid race, everyone was turned safely back to Birdhill from where they returned to the finish line at the Fivealley. Young Joseph Donnelly put in a fine performance to take the win with Eva Moynan in second and Duncan Hodgins taking third. Well done to everyone who raced, thanks as always to our photographers, timekeepers and road marshals.
Now for the weekend that was in it…Visit Nenagh Classic 2016.
Saturday 16th April. VNC Team TT and Munster Championship Team Time Trial.
Over the last few weeks we had two teams working very hard brushing up on their team time trialling technique to be in top form for race day and my god they didn’t disappoint us.
We welcomed three members from Limerick cc to join in with our second team Frank Moloney, David O’Brien and Anthony Gahan alongside our very own Rob Dalton, Malachy Dorris and Nanno Vuyk. They had a cracking ride and worked very well together. For their very first outing they had a time of just over 43 minutes for the 28.5km course with was just fantastic and you should be all very proud of yourselves.
Team 1 which consisted of John Foote, Owen Hynes, Liam Callaghan, Noel Kennedy, Eoin Woods, and Pat Bergin put in a fine showing but were heartbreakingly beaten by only 16 seconds to the Munster championship win by our counterparts from the south of the county but they were still thrilled to have won the silver medal which is a huge achievement for them. They have bettered the clubs previous best time in a team time trial by a clear margin averaging 42.5kph and finishing with a time of 40.03 for a 28.5km course. Serious kudos to all!

Munster Championship Silver medalist winners in the VNC Team Time Trial 2016 . Left to right Virginia O’ Dowd, Patrick Bergin, Eoin Woods, John Foote, Owen Hynes, Liam Callaghan and Noel Kennedy.
Sunday was just hectic…
Starting with the family fun cycle in the town which turned out to be a huge success yet again this year. We want to say a huge thanks to all the volunteers and marshals who kept everyone safe on the roads.
We had riders in every race this year. Eva Moynan in the Ladies race, Nanno Vuyk and Owen Hynes in the A4, Eoin Woods in the A3 and finally David Kyle in the A1/2 category.
Each race was as tough as the course makers could make it. Climbs, climbs and oh, more climbs just in case you thought it was too simple 🙂 I followed the A4 race and my god they were flying it. Trying to stay ahead of the race was fun. Trying to do live feeds online to keep the club up to date on the riders turned out to be impossible.
In the A4 Nanno suffered a fall, thankfully at low speed, on the climb up Army Hill when another rider dropped his chain and he ended up knocking another rider in front of Nanno. Thankfully he was ok and got back on his bike and finished the race but found himself on his own and couldn’t get back to the group. Owen had a fairly uneventful race losing touch with the front group on Army Hill but then some great descending and working well together with a chasing group on the rolling road from Toome to Ballinamona cross managed to get back to the front group again but just didn’t have the legs left to stay in the fight going up Killeen on the second big climb of the day. Despite having taken part in the team time trial the day before Owen and Nanno finished out their races. Well done lads.
Eva Moynan finished her first ever open race and what an achievement it was for this young lady. Fantastic stuff.
Eoin Woods completed his race strongly after the tough 118km course but was unfortunate to be in a breakaway group that was stopped up by the commissaire due to the main group getting lost and then suffered cramp after having to wait on the road for about ten minutes before the race was restarted. Unfortunate but that’s the joys of racing!
David kyle was in action in the A1/2 race, a complicated 168km gruelling course. There was a strong field of riders in attendance here but David finished out the course very strong. Well done to all the riders you did yourselves and the club very proud. Thanks also to our back up drivers in the race.
Thanks to our lead car drivers, all our marshals, photographers and of course our loyal supporters who were out in force cheering the riders on…
