Club notes / Next week’s club spins
Club AGM and electing of the new 2015/16 Committee.
Dont forget our AGM will be held this Wednesday in the Dapp Inn, October 28th at 8pm and we will be also electing the new 2015/16 committee, so it is very important to attend and we expect to see a good turnout of members on the night.
Club notes
Recently club member Patrick Bergin travelled to the Balleric Islands to take part in the annual 3 day event in Menorca called “Volta Cicloturista Internacional A Menorca” this event closes the cycling season on the Balearic Islands. Here is a brief report from Pat on how he got on over the few days.
Three of us joined Dan Marsh of Marsh-Mallows.com Cycling Tours and a group of 10 riders was needed to take part in the event which had 250 riders in total.
Day 1 was a 40km warm up spin with coffee to start and beer and whiskey to finish!!
Day 2 took us on a 100km spin with a timed 2km approx hill climb of 12% avg grade but after only 4hrs sleep and still tired at the start line it wasn’t easy!! This was followed by rugby and more recovery beer!!!
Day 3 took us on a 60km spin with a timed 3.5km hill climb at 9% grade with the same lack of sleep and lots of coffee on the start line..!!
After the event there was a big feast and again rugby, but with only light beer this time because of the ferry and drive back to the mainland. Overall it was a very enjoyable few days.
Meanwhile, back here in more familiar surroundings, a few of the lads went out mountain biking in Cloughjordan during the week on Tuesday and on Friday evening. If your interested in joining the lads just give Liam a text on 087 6322618 and he’ll let you know what their plans are for the week.
On Saturday the lads kicked off their race training with what was supposed to be some base work but as is usually the case with lads and hills, restraint was hard to maintain! There was everything from the old town sign sprints, to trying to find a new max heart rate for Kevin as nobody believed his could be so low 🙂 to a roadside broken chain repair masterclass! An eventful and enjoyable spin for everyone and we’ll try again next week to iron out the kinks and get the winter plan on track.
On Sunday after we all had an extra hour in bed due to winter time kicking in, we had our UL spin for coffee and we had another lovely morning for it. There was a great turnout as usual for this spin and the group was largely kept together out as far as Birdhill where the lads deviated a little and went up the ramp to allow everyone come back together on the way to O’Briens Bridge. Then the seniors added a little loop around to Corbally and back to UL to make sure everyone got to the coffee stop at roughly the same time. Things got interesting at the gates to UL where some went straight to the Arena cafe as usual, but a select few were given a fabulous guided scenic tour of the entire campus by Rob who works there 🙂 When everyone eventually got to the cafe we were greeted to scenes of hundreds of energetic ladies who were getting ready to take part in the Women’s mini marathon and there was great motivational warmup dancing happening at the steps of the cafe! There was a fantastic atmosphere and it was great to have a nice morning for it to take place. After everyone was full of coffee and scones they headed back for home. Unfortunately there was one puncture on the outskirts of the city and four stopped up and got it quickly fixed and they cycled together back in road. Overall a great mornings spin!!

Some of the group after the coffee stop in UL. Big thanks to our good friend Carly Nevin for taking the picture.
We also want to wish club member Eva Moynan the very best of luck for next weekend where she was one of only four girls chosen to represent Munster at a special indoor velodrome training camp in Alkemaar, Holland! Well done Eva, enjoy the experience!!
Awards Dinner
Reminder Our our awards night is only a few weeks away! It will be held in the main function room at the Thatched Cottage, Ballycommon. The dinner starts at 7pm. We will then enjoy a three course dinner with tea/coffee served afterwards and all for the super price of just €25. We decided to have our prize giving earlier this year as we do understand that coming up to Christmas everyone has a lot happening and have other commitments on and might not be able to make it. So there’s no excuses now folks as it’s in November 🙂 Remember, everyone is welcome to join us on the night so do bring your family and friends along for a fun filled evening. We do need to know numbers as soon as you possibly can as the restaurant will want to know how many people to cater for which is only fair. Please contact Jan on 087 1374354 to confirm your attendance… Thanks everyone and we look forward to seeing you all very soon 🙂
