North Tipperary Wheelers Club Notes Weekend of Sunday 20th April 2014

Over the Easter weekend, the Club was represented at open racing far and wide.  On Saturday Kevin Byrne and Aidan Kileen made the journey to Kerry to take part in Saturday’s stage of the Rás Mumhan where both the conditions and the route over the 6 categorised climbs were reported as ‘tough’.   On Sunday, attention was focused at the Rás An Laois where Tommy Hanrahan and Dan Hogan competed in the A3 category race and Mikey Connors in the A4 race.   While Tommy would take the ‘Sprint Prime’ prize it would be Dan Hogan who would take the overall second place behind eventual winner Kenneth Kennedy (Nenagh CC) in the same A3 category race.  These are remarkable achievements by both Dan and Tommy and this was Dan’s first outing as an A3 rider after being promoted from the A4 category only last week after his 5th position at the Visit Nenagh Classic race. Elsewhere, Brian O’Neill was reported putting in a 100km stealth training ride in Conamara, Co. Galway.  Well done to all riders over the weekend.

At home, the first road race of the club calendar took place on Thursday last.  This new 20km route took riders on a loop between Birdhill to Ballina before the finish at the Yellowbridge on the old N7.  With three timed handicapped groups setting off, the first across the line to scope the win would be Tommy Hanrahan followed by Mikey Connors in second and club road captain Liam Callaghan taking third.  Results of club racing results for the year to date are available on the club website (northtippwheelers.com).   Club training rides and spins continued last week with increasing numbers turning out at the Tuesday night training ride which left Moynan’s bike shop in Nenagh at 6pm, Saturday from Woodies carpark at 9am and Sunday from Moynans at 9am.  The Tuesday night spin took on the 60km VNC route in reverse and the Saturday morning spin took a return visit to Co. Clare rolling as far as Siximilebridge before returning to Nenagh in a 100+km ride.

Training continues this week at the same times. Details will be available on the club website and facebook.    For further details of any club events or club membership please contact club chairperson Pat Bergin 0876744400.
