Club Notes
We hope you all had a lovely weekend and that you all managed to get out on the bikes for a spin.
We had another busy week in the club.
Monday 20th: We had our new club gear fitting evening with our new club clothing supplier, Aidan Crowley of Velo Revolution. It was held in Una Powells in Summerhill where there was a big turnout of members eager to see the new style, quality and fit of the new clothing we will be getting. Overall the feedback was very positive. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Aidan for travelling from Cork to meet us in Nenagh and taking time out of his busy schedule to do the fitting night for us on such short notice.
Aidan is working on a fabulous new design for us and we should have it finalised this week so we can get it ordered. More to follow very soon…
Tuesday 21st:We had our normal club training spin that left from Moynans and also we had a few members who also took part in the ever popular Limerick league race.
Wednesday 22nd:We had our club intermediate spin that left from moynans . This week we had 7 members out on the road and the route on the evening was Nenagh, Cloughjordan, Dunkerrin, Moneygall and back to Nenagh. There was a good pace kept by the group on the evening and they averaged 27kph on the evening.Well done lads. Looking forward to the next evening out already.
Thursday 23rd: We had the second of our club road races. The route was Birdhill-Left over the four sisters-left in Ballina on to Birdhill-left again and finish at the fivealley, 25km. Read the full report here. Two out of the first group managed to stay away and the podium was made up of Joey Donnelly 1st, Duncan Hodgins 2nd & Martin Cosgrave(Raparee CC) 3rd. Winner of the Ladies category was Eva Moynan after a close sprint to the line. Very well done all!!
Friday 24th: 7 of our members headed out for a race training spin on Friday evening as they couldn’t make it to the Saturday spin due to work and family commitments. The spin started from the Five Alley and the group covered a distance of 80km on the evening. Unfortunately for the lads the weather was a lot worse than forecasted and it pretty much rained down on them from the moment they left. On the plus side they all got in some great training and all enjoyed getting another good session under their belts. Well done lads.
Saturday 25th: We had two spins leaving from Woodies carpark at 9am. The first was the usual race training spin and also an intermediate level spin catering for those who eventually want to progress up a level.
Sunday 26th: We had the usual morning spin return after the hectic weekend before with the VNC. This weeks route for the leisure/intermediates was Nenagh, Borrisokane, Ballingarry, Aglish, Carraigahorig, Ballinderry, Puckane and back to Nenagh, 70km, and the Seniors added an extra loop from Ballingarry headed on to Riverstown, Portumna and back to Nenagh via Ballinderry, Puckane, 90km . We were thrilled to see so many out on the morning and it goes to show how popular the spot of cycling has become. We had a huge turnout with almost 30 cyclists setting out on either the 70Km or 90Km route. The weather was perfect for the bikes, the sun was out and the spirits were high. The full group rolled out together until Ardcroney where the first split took place with 13 riders opting for the longer distance. The option of staying with the racing group to Ballingarry was taken by a small number of intermediate riders which was a really worthwhile experience. A point that is worth noting for intermediate riders is that the faster group arrived at the turnoff point in Ballingarry just under 5 minutes ahead. This plan of encouraging intermediate riders to test themselves by staying with the racing group for a few kilometres is working very well and will hopefully see more “giving it a go” in the future. A very enjoyable morning had by all, so very well done everyone.
Weekend racing
We had two club members in action today in the John Drumm Memorial in Currow, Co. Kerry. We had Tommy Hanrahan and David Kyle representing the club in the A3 event, with Tommy placing a very respectable 15th position today and was in the prizes so well done. David also did very well today but again found himself in a bad position when the decisive break went and missed the opportunity to go with it but was not too far behind in the bunch crossing the line. Well done to both lads for keeping the club colours flying at another event.
Summer weekend away 2015.
Folks, We are planning on having another of our always very popular weekend cycling trips to some far flung strips of tarmac (relax it’s only Kerry! 🙂 ) at the end of July, Friday 24th to Sunday 26th. We have secured an absolutely fantastic deal in the very fabulous Brehon Hotel!! 2 nights B&B for only €179pps which we think you’ll all agree is a steal for one of the best hotels in Killarney in the middle of summer!!
Now for all our leisure cyclists, please don’t let the routes above put you off from coming along for the festivities as we will also be running shorter easier routes to accommodate everyone who comes along and there is also 3 months left to train for it! Bring along the better halves even if they don’t cycle, or the whole family, as there are fantastic Spa & Leisure facilities in the hotel to keep any non cyclists occupied as well as the always buzzing town of Killarney. There is even the FolkFest music festival happening next door in the INEC that weekend! We promise a very memorable weekend will be had by all who come along and no one will be left behind on any of the cycles! It’s not race training and it will be some of the best cycling you will do all year!! This weekends main purpose is to get as many club members together as possible and get everyone in all the different elements of the club together, be it racing or leisure, to all enjoy a great weekend of cycling and partake in the great craic that is always to be had in Killarney. I’m sure when we get off the bikes, we might have a little recovery protein afterwards…
To secure your spot email northtippwheelers@gmail.com or call/text Owen on 087 0523275 as soon as possible as spaces are limited.
