Club Notes 13th April 2014
North Tipperary Wheelers Club Notes Weekend of Sunday 13th April 2014
It was all in the numbers this week for the Wheelers. 16 riders on two different Tuesday night training rides, a further 16 turning out on Thursday for the first club race of the season, 19 representing the Club at the Visit Nenagh Classic on Saturday and Sunday and of course there was the normal weekend spins and junior training!
This week saw a notable increase in the Tuesday night training ride in preparation of the Club racing calendar, which commenced on Thursday with the first of the J.Moynan Time Trials (TT). This first club race of 2014 saw the introduction of a new 16km route on the old N7. It would be Tommy Hanrahan who would take first place with a time of 22.16 just 31 seconds ahead of runner-up Liam Callaghan with Benny Delaney taking third spot a further 2 minutes back. Full results can be read here.
The weekend was dominated by the Visit Nenagh Classic – a prestigious race on the National Cycling calendar – with the club represented in both the Team Time Trail (TTT) on Saturday afternoon and the A3, A4 and Ladies races on Sunday. With a less than full strength team, the Wheelers did well to take 8th position in the TTT just behind the Visit Nenagh.ie team in a strong field that was eventually won by a Dutch team. On Sunday, a westerly breeze and testing courses were to take their toal on all road races. Despite numerous splits in the 67km A4 race, it would be the Wheelers – Dan Hogan who would stay with the lead group to scoop 5th position and the points resulting in an automatic promotion for Dan to the A3 category from the accumulation of points from his season to date. Well done to Dan. In the A3 race, Liam Callaghan finished just outside the points whilst Tommy Hanrahan who had been in an early break suffered a mechanical problem on Seaneens ruining any race hopes whilst the day was not to prove any better for Paddy Rohan. The ladies race was to repeat the 67km A4 route where Julie White would come home behind the lead group.
This week, training riders will continue over the weekend and next Tuesday night at 6pm from Moynan’s bike shop. This Thursday’s (April 17th) club race is a 20km road race. Details will be posted during the week on facebook/northtippwheelers
